São Paulo – VISITORS’ CULTURAL GUIDE
- November 20th, Friday, is the Black Awareness Day (public holiday). Lots of activities related to African culture and history take place all over the city during the weekend of the 21th-22nd. Furthermore, the elevated highway (a.k.a. the Minhocão) in downtown São Paulo will be closed for cars during the whole weekend (we recommend you to go there for a walk).
1. MAC Ibirapuera / Afro Brasil / MAM
MAC | Contemporary Art Museum | São Paulo’s most important museum for national and international Contemporary Art. It hosts mainly temporary exhibitions.
Temporary exhibition | Distant Neighbors – Latin American Art in MAC USP Collection (until Jul/2016): It presents about 250 works of latin american artists, including paintings, sculptures, installations, objects, photographs, records and performances of projects, videos and artists publications, all of the MAC USP collection.
Temporary exhibition | Goeldi/Jardim: Printmaking and Compass (until Jul/2016): prints by Oswaldo Goeldi and Evandro Carlos Jardim, great brazilian printmarkers, belonging to the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo (about 10 prints by each artist).

AFRO BRASIL | This museum highlight the importance of African people in the formation of Brazilian culture, heritage and identity as known nowadays. The permanent Collection is considered the largest Afro-American descendent art collection in America with more than 6,000 masterpieces, sculptures, documents, engravings, ceramics, paintings, contemporary arts, jewelry, objects, reliefs, photographs and textiles. The main part of the collection is in the long term exhibition, portraying mainly Brazil, some countries from the African Continent, Cuba, Haiti and the United States.
Temporary exhibition| The adventures of Pierre Verger: The exhibition brings together almost 220 images and some videos of Verger’s trips around the world.

MAM | Modern Art Museum | This gallery hosts important temporary exhibitions mainly of Brazilian artists. The museum has got also an excellent restaurant serving light meals and snacks.
Temporary exhibition| 34th Panorama of Brazilian Art (until Dec/2015): This biennial show proposes this year a parallel between the 3 dimensions objetcts produced in Brazil between 4,000 and 1,000 yeas b. C. with the national contemporary production. The curators invited Berna Reale, Cao Guimarães, Cildo Meireles, Erika Verzutti, Miguel Rio Branco e Pitágoras Lopes – six artists from different generations and areas, with contrasting artistic research – to draw this parallel.

2. MASP / Parque Trianon
MASP | São Paulo’s Art Museum | São Paulo’s most comprehensive collection of Western art (Goya, Bosch, El Greco, Manet, Van Gogh…), including some fine Works of Brazilian painters (Almeida Junior, Cândido Portinari, Anita Malfatti, Victor Brecheret…).
Designed by the architect Lina Bo Bardi, this building is considered a symbol of modernism. Located in the intersection between Avenida Paulista and the tunnel of the Avenida 9 de Julho, the project is realized as a large volume suspended leaving open floor plan, supported on four pillars. It allows passersby go below the building. That hall is called the “vão livre” (“open void”). On Sunday afternoons, there is also a Craft/Antiquities Fair in this open hall.
Temporary exhibition | “Between Dictatorships” – León Ferrari (until Feb/2016): The exposition presents some works of the period that the Argentinian artist leaved 15 years in São Paulo, during his exile.

PARQUE TRIANON | Trianon Park | Just in front of the “vão livre” of MASP, Trianon’s park have the only remaining reserve of Atlantic forest (Mata Atlântica) in the region.

3. Pinacoteca/ Parque da Luz / Memorial da Resistência
PINACOTECA | Art Gallery | São Paulo’s most important collection of Brazilian 19th Century art. It possesses the greater collection of Almeida Junior’s work and other “academic artists” such as Eliseu Visconti, Pedro Bernardelli and Benedito Calixto. However, it has got some 1920s modernist representative examples (such as Lasar Segall, Tarsila do Amaral, Di Cavalcanti etc) and some pieces of the second half of the 20th Century art (artists like Waldemar Cordeiro, Nuno Ramos). The building of Pinacoteca is originally from Ramos de Azevedo, an 19th century “eclectic” architect, but it was restored in the 1990s by the modernist Paulo Mendes da Rocha.

PARQUE DA LUZ | Luz Park | Located nearby the Pinacoteca, Luz Park is a sculpture Park, with more then 50 sculptures of Pinacoteca’s collection. There you can find works of Amilcar de Castro, Victor Brecheret, Léon Ferrari and many others. It is the oldest park in town (1825).

MEMORIAL DA RESISTÊNCIA | Memorial of the Resistance | An institution dedicated to the preservation of references to the memories of the political repression during the Brazilian military dictatorship and the resistance to it, located on the ground floor of the Estação Pinacoteca.
Temporary exhibition | Yuyanapaq. To remember (until Jan/2016), a traveling exhibition of 40 photographs was organized in 2004 about the peruan authoritarian period (1980-2000) and has been shown in many other countries.

LASAR SEGALL | Lasar Segall Museum | Lasar Segall is a Latvian-born and naturalized-Brazilian that originaly was close to the Expressionist Movement. Most part of his work is in this museum, that was also his home and studio until his death in 1957.

ITAÚ CULTURAL/ESPAÇO OLAVO SETUBAL | Olavo Setubal Exhibition Hall | The collection brings together paintings, prints, sculptures, photographs, films, videos, installations, rare editions of literary works, coins, medals and other pieces of the Colonial (1500-1822) and Imperial (1822-1889) period of Brazil.

SELVAGE BODY VARIATIONS: VIVEIROS DE CASTRO, PHOTOGRAPHER (until 29th Nov/2015) | Before becoming an Anthropologist, Eduardo Viveiros de Castro was a Photographer and he had collaborated with great Brazilian artists such as Hélio Oiticica, Ivan Cardoso and Wally Salomão. The exhibition in Sesc Ipiranga brings together 400 photos of Viveiros de Castro, both as a professional photographer and as an Ethnographer next to Araweté, Kulina, Yanomami e Yawalapiti.

FRIDA KAHLO AND THE SURREALISTS WOMEN IN MEXICO (until Jan/2016)| This exhibition brings together 20 canvases of the 143 that Frida Kahlo has painted during her whole live. It presents as well other kinds of her artistic production, such as collage, drawings and printings. Additionally, it exposes dozens of Works realized by other 16 artists assembled around Frida in Mexico.

19th CONTEMPORARY ART FESTIVAL VIDEOBRASIL / SOUTHERN PANORAMAS (Until Jan/2016) | Video art exhibition that brings together recent works of the most important Brazilian video makers (Cao Guimarães, Carlos Nader, Karim Aïnouz, Marcelo Gomes and João Moreira Salles…) as well as Southern artists, like the Peruvian Gabriel Acevedo, the Israeli Nurit Sharett and the Algerian Malek Bensmaïl.Paço das Artes is an art gallery installed in an unfinished modernist building inside the University campus.

CINEMATECA BRASILEIRA | Dedicated to the preservation of Brazilian audio-visual production, the Cinemateca has also good movie theatres and interesting Brazilian rare movies festivals. The problem is that generally these films are exhibited without English subtitles. The building was a slaughterhouse from 1887 until 1988.
